Overview
Franklin reports are generated based on a template from case data and classifications. In rare situations, you may need to apply changes that cannot be achieved through actions in the case or normal report generation from templates.
Manual Report Editing allows you to override Franklin’s generated report and create a fully customized version before signing.
Important: Manual report editing is a high-risk workflow and should only be used as a last resort. Manual changes do not affect case data and may cause the report to differ from the current case state.
Why Use Manual Report Editing?
Manual editing is intended for situations where automatic reports cannot meet your reporting requirements, such as:
Custom wording or layout requirements that cannot be achieved through templates
One-off formatting fixes for complex reports
Key Principles
When a report is edited manually:
Manual reports are fully freeform
All content is editable, similar to editing a Word document.
There are no protected fields.
Manual edits override auto-generation
The report becomes independent from the automatic report flow.
Franklin will not “sync” case updates into the manually edited report.
Manual edits do not update case data. You can edit structured elements in the report (e.g., zygosity or classifications), but:
These edits apply only to the report
They do not change the variant/classification/case data stored in Franklin
Manual reports are auditable and reversible
Saving a manual report requires justification.
You can regenerate an automatic report at any time before signing, which replaces the manual report.
Entering Manual Edit Mode
In the report preview tab, from the report menu, select Edit report manually.
A warning modal will appear explaining the risk and that the action is not recommended. To continue, you must type agree and then select Continue.
Editing the Report
Once in manual edit mode:
The report opens in an editor where you can make freeform changes.
You can insert content anywhere.
You can use formatting tools (headers, tables, bold/italic, etc.)
The editor supports adding an electronic signature block.
Saving a Manual Report
When saving:
You will be asked to provide a justification explaining why manual edits were needed.
This justification is saved for audit and appears in the case history.
After saving:
A Word version and PDF version are stored and can be exported (same as with template-based reports)
The report preview will indicate that the report was created by a manual edit
Regenerating an Automatic Report (Revert Manual Changes)
If a manual report exists (before signing), you can regenerate the template-based report. This will:
Create a new generated report based on the latest case data
Replace the current manual report
Permanently discard all manual edits
You will see a confirmation modal before proceeding.
Signing the Report
Manual reports can be signed as final, just like template-based reports. Once a report is signed as final. Signed final reports are revised through revision workflows (amended/addended).
Case History & Audit Tracking
Franklin logs key actions related to manual editing, which are presented in the case history tab. This ensures a clear audit trail for compliance and clinical traceability.
